YKK AP Wins Two Honors in the 2018 Architectural Products Product Innovation Awards

Recognized for its unique entrance option for accessible design and for the expansion of the Tulane University A.B. Freeman School of Business

AUSTELL, GA. (Nov. 15, 2018)YKK AP America Inc. has won two Architectural Products 2018 Product Innovation Awards for its YSD 600 T thermally broken, low threshold sliding glass door and for its YUW 750 XT unitized curtain wall’s role in the expansion of the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University.

The Architectural Products Product Innovation Awards (PIAs) determine and honor innovation in the development and refinement of buildings-related products. Judged by a group of 16 independent industry professionals, the program represents a mechanism to impartially review product and present to readers items their peers found innovative and worth investigating.

“At YKK AP, we are dedicated to looking for new ways to improve our products and processes to best serve our customers and community,” said Mike Turner, senior vice president of sales and marketing at YKK AP. “To be recognized by such an esteemed panel of judges for our team’s dedication to quality and innovation is a true honor.”

The YSD 600 T is a low threshold architectural sliding glass door designed to provide architects and contractors with an additional entrance option for accessible design. It provides maximum energy performance, makes accessible design easier to achieve, and because it can be shop-glazed, it does so on an aggressive timeline, with less labor and costs. As the aging population continues to grow, architects and contractors are increasingly designing for accessibility – even when it is not specified under the American Disabilities Act. While a product like YSD 600 T cannot make an entire building accessible, it is a critical piece of the puzzle in enabling a holistic design geared toward accessibility.

The project winner, Tulane University’s A.B. Freeman School of Business was inspired by Tulane’s mascot, The Wave and several 100+ years old oak trees lining the street. The YUW 750 XT unitized curtain wall was used in the design of the scalloped curtain wall to provide protection against extreme weather.

“Building on the success of last year’s program, our eighth edition of the awards proves commercial building manufacturers are committed to, and are working arduously toward, delivering more sustainable products, as well as products that deliver better performance, life and affordability,” said Jim Crockett, editorial director, Architectural Products Magazine.
